Bio

 Dr. Kathy J. Turpin is President/CEO of K Turpin Consulting, LLC, specializes in consulting services to national sports organizations, collegiate athletics, and higher education administration. Her areas of expertise include program review and assessment, compliance, membership, academic success, leadership development, hiring and personnel management, strategic planning, gender equity and Title IX, drug use and abuse education, and best practices for implementing a drug deterrence program.

She previously served as the Vice President of Sport Drug Testing for the National Center for Drug Free Sport (2007-2018) and provided oversight and day-to-day administration of the Sport Drug Testing department to include the drug‐testing programs for Drug Free Sport’s 300+ individual collegiate institutions, state high school associations, and athletic conferences. She also joined Drug Free Sport in 2007 from its sister company, Sports Association Management, Inc. (SAMI), where she served as a consultant to several collegiate athletic organizations including the NCAA, Great Lakes Valley Conference, Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Northern Sun Athletics Conference, and the Division II Athletics Directors Association to develop and disseminate best practices implementing the D2 ADA guiding principles for a model Division II athletics program. She maintained an independent consulting business and continued providing services to these organizations as well as the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, Upper Midwest Athletic Conference and the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association. Prior to SAMI, Turpin served as an interim director of athletics, associate director of athletics, compliance coordinator and senior woman administrator at Barry University (FL) and Truman State University (MO).

Turpin's professional history includes more than 25 years as a collegiate athletics administrator and coach. She has been a frequent presenter on NCAA compliance issues, SWA professional growth, and has served on numerous conference and NCAA committees including the NCAA Women’s Basketball Rules Committee and is a past chair of the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball Committee. She continues to serve as a compliance consultant to the NCAA and the Division II membership. She has been responsible for the supervision of sports programs and departments; has been involved in all personnel evaluations and departmental hiring; and has organized athletics fundraising campaigns. As the senior woman administrator at Truman, she chaired a Gender Equity Committee, organized a Title IX audit, assisted with an OCR investigation on campus, devised a survey to study unmet interest, and summarized the results of this survey.

Turpin was the first female inducted into the Culver‐Stockton College Athletic Hall of Fame for her successful ten‐year stint as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach and served as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Augustana College (SD).

She currently serves as a member of the Board of Trustees at Culver-Stockton College (MO) and the Advisory Board of the Institute to Promote Athlete Health & Wellness. She is an active member of Women Leaders in College Sports, is a graduate of the Women Leaders/NCAA Leadership Institute and has previously served on their board of directors.

Turpin earned a Ph.D. in leadership and higher education administration from Barry University (FL) where she completed research on the career paths of females in intercollegiate athletics and their perceptions toward the decline of women in the profession. She also earned a master’s degree in sport sociology from Western Illinois University and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri‐Columbia, where she was a four‐year starter on the women’s basketball team.
